BRAZIL

Banda Olodum O MOVIMENTO
Thanks to Paul Simon's RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS project Olodum has been able
to gain some entry to the US market. Like Ara Ketu, they have created
a stage performance group and are creating some of the hippest music
in the Afro-Atlantic world.
Continental 107800521... $17.99CD

CAPOEIRA SENZALA DE SANTOS
The martial art of capoeira is unique to Brazil and is another of the
many gifts Africans have given to world culture. The music played to
accompany the performance is played on the berimbau, various hand drums
and shakers. This disc can't provide the visual excitement that
witnessing an exhibition of capoeira does, but between the 60+ minutes
of music and the exhaustive liner notes, anyone interested in knowing
what it's all about will surely be educated.

This collection follows Fan Fan as he travels from his native Zaire,

Remmy Ongala, to Kenya. A nice recording, especially for the rare tracks
with Orch Makassy.

Wenge Musica BOUGER BOUGER
This is the first release on my label. Originally released in Africa
in '88, this is the first international release of the band's seminal recording.
When it was initially released it topped the charts in Zaire and for a couple
of months in '94 it was at the top of the charts in Europe. It has received positive
reviews in the Beat and RMM so what are you waiting for, buy it and support my
fledgling label.

Popular African Music OA302... $16.99CD

Oumou Dioubate FOUROU
I didn't know that Oumou had made another recording as leader until
this arrived from Paris. Of course there are no notes or recording
dates, but I believe FOUROU predates LANCEY-STCD 1046. As on LANCEY,
Oumou concerns herself with creating a Manding pop sound. Featuring
Kante Manfila on guitar and a large horn section.
Gefraco 070...$13.99CD

Kante Manfila & Balla Kalla KANKAN BLUES
Recorded in 91 by German producer Gunter Gretz, this recording is a set

Kante's recordings as a leader.

Momo "Wandel" Soumah MATCHOWE
The subject of a feature article in a recent Option magazine, Momo is
a sax/clarinet player who is working to carve out a jazz style
incorporating the traditional sounds and instruments of Guinea.
His all acoustic approach is one I wish more African musicians would
take. Recommended.

MADAGASCAR

Various Artists
A WORLD OUT OF TIME, VOL. 2 HENRY KAISER/DAVID LINDLEY IN MADAGASCAR
This is the much anticipated follow up to VOL. 1, which was one of the
best selling world music album of all time. Like the first volume,
Kaiser and Lindley wisely stay out of the way, only adding a few solos
and a vocal. Not to worry, they didn't use up all the good tracks on
the first volume. A fine followup.
Shanachie 64048... $14.99CD SPECIAL ORDER ONLY

MALAWI

MALI

Salif Keita SORO
This recording sounds as fresh and innovative today as it did when it
was released in 87. Recorded in Paris with a big budget, not only did it
launch Salif onto the world stage, it set the tone for the emerging
modern Manding sound. An absolute classic which should be in every
record collection!
Mango 9808... $15.99CD

In fact, I think I like this volume better.

XALIS was Youssou N'Dour's first record with the newly formed Etoile de Dakar.
Popular African Music ADC303...$16.99CD

Doudou Ndiaye Rose DJABOTE
Widely considered to be the master of sabar drumming, Doudou fronts
a fifty member ensemble, made up in no small number by his offspring.
Cited by Baaba Maal as the most awesome musician he has ever met,
Doudou's music is also greatly admired by Peter Gabriel, who included a
track from DJABOTE on his PLUS FROM US recording.
Real World/ Caroline 30986... $15.99CD

Mansour Seck N'DER FOUTA TOORO VOL.1
Mansour is Baaba Maal's right hand man and figures
prominently in just about everything Baaba does. N'DER FOUTA...
brings Mansour to the front, singing and playing guitar, accompanied
by a largely acoustic string and drum ensemble. Compiled from two
cassette releases, in addition to Mansour, Mauritanian griot Ousmane
Hamady Diop takes the lead for four tracks. Very nice all the way around.
Oh yeah, Baaba sings on one track.
Stern's 1061... $13.99CD

SIERRA LEONE

S.E. Rogie DEAD MEN DON'T SMOKE MARIJUANA
Rogie's was one of the old time greats of West African music. His
relaxed palm wine style, with it's acoustic guitar and lyrics in
English and Creole, won him a large following both at home and
internationally. His career spanned several decades and he even lived
in the Bay area for a number of years in the '70s. DEAD MEN... was on
the market for a very short time when he died on July 4 while on tour
in Europe. It is a beautiful recording and makes a fine addition to
anyone's collection.
Realworld 2344-2... $14.99CD

Earthworks STEW20CD... $13.99CD

TANZANIA

Mlimani Park Orchestra SIKINDE
What can I say, I loved this recording so much I put my money where my
mouth is and reissued it. Originally available as a very expensive German
import, when it went out of print I seized the opportunity to make it
the second release on my fledling label. I think what attracted me to it
initially was the great horn arrangements, but everything about the
group: the tunes, the vocals, the grooves are simply great. In short,
if you don't already have it, buy it now!
Africassette 9402... $13.99CD

Remmy Ongala SONGS FOR THE POOR MAN
Remmy, or Dr. Remmy as he is referred to in Tanzania, is highly regarded
in Dar for his insightful and witty comments on life, but since most
of us can't understand Swahili we just have to groove on his rich voice
and the swinging rumba created by him and the band. When it was
released in 1989, this recording made quite a few Best Of The Year lists.
Real World 2305-2...$14.99CD

Remmy Ongala and Orchestre Super Matimila MAMBO
The 1992 followup to SONGS FOR THE POOR MAN, MAMBO was recorded during
the 1991 Recording Week at Real World Studios. It features more of
Remmy's wonderful music, with the only notable difference being he
sings a number of songs in English.
